The music industry today is a lot about catching your breaks. You catch them where you can, because you probably won’t have another anytime soon. Crash Coordinates members, Chris Kalla (Guitar/Vocals) and Taylor Lang (formerly of C.C.), caught an early break when they met in, an Arizona State University, Music History class. A few jam session ensued and it was decided to bring on Chris Wahl (Guitar/Vocals) and John Stoddard (Drums). Their earlier work, according to Chris Wahl, was “all over the place and didn’t make any sense.” After working out the kinks and mastering each other style of play the music really began to flow.
In the summer of 2007 began recording their EP with Producer Bob Hoag (The Bled, Scary Kids Scaring, The Format), at his studio in Mesa, Arizona. While in the studio the group realized that they were still missing something. Vincent Liou (Keyboards/Synthesizer) was brought on to fill in the gaps. Founding member, Taylor Lang, needed to find his place in the real world and decided to take a “9-5.” Kevin Williams was brought in to fill in as bassist. Kevin was from Chicago and decided to make the move to for school and make his mark with C.C.
Their EP - Ansible was released in May of 2008 and I was able to obtain a copy of it. I was very much impressed on how well they sounded for being such a young group. It was very well done. Bob Hoag did an amazing job producing the album. Crash Coordinates has some major potential to really open the door for themselves. Their sound is unique along the same lines as Minus the Bear. Experience will be the best thing for these young guys. After more time on the road and working around school schedules you will really see these guys come into their own. With tracks like Pompeii and The Torino Scale, I find it hard to believe that you won’t see these guys on a decent Indie Label.
I have stood next to several new bands that refused to do the hard work and wanted to contract signed out of the gate. Crash Coordinates is made up of hard working college students with a drive to do their best with everything they do.
